Assessing Your Air: Lungs & Breathing Test

Assessing Your Air: Lungs & Breathing Test

Assessing how well your body can use oxygen is a vital part of your overall health. Poor lung function can affect all parts of your body and can create symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, and confusion. The good news is that Hoag Executive Health makes testing your lung function is easy and accessible for everyone.

What Is A Pulmonary Function Test?

Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are a type of breathing test that shows how well the lungs are working. These can measure lung volume, capacity, rates of flow and gas exchange to help your doctor diagnose and treat lung disorders.

These tests are done as part of the executive physical exam. They can help diagnose conditions like asthma, chronic bronchitis, COPD, respiratory infections and lung fibrosis. They also help determine if you have chest wall weakness or inflammation from exposure to chemical and environmental irritants.

Included in the Hoag Executive Physical

In addition to many other comprehensive tests, the Hoag Executive Physical exam includes VO₂ Max and Spirometry.

Maximum Oxygen Consumption (VO₂ Max) is the maximum rate of oxygen that your body is able to use during exercise. The greater your VO₂ max, the more oxygen your body can consume. The test will show how effective your lungs are at using oxygen to create energy.

A spirometry test is a pulmonary function test that measures how well the lungs are working. It is done by measuring how much air you can blow out in one second, and then calculating how much air you can blow out in one second after taking a deep breath.
