September is National Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Month

September is National Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month. Organized by the Heart Rhythm Society, it gives us an opportunity to increase awareness of this cardiac condition.

What is Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)?

Afib is an irregular and sometimes very fast heart rhythm, or arrhythmia. It can be a very serious medical condition that leads to blood clots in the heart. The symptoms can vary in severity. Some people have persistent and crippling symptoms that are life-threatening and require constant medical attention. Mild symptoms can be unnoticeable, so millions of people may have A-fib but are unaware.

Can Atrial Fibrillation Be Caused By Anxiety?

Anxiety can contribute or worsen your symptoms of atrial fibrillation. High levels of stress can complicate any medical condition you suffer from.  Stress and anxiety can even be the cause or the symptom of other illnesses. Many other conditions can affect arrhythmias, so it is a good idea to have your doctor review your symptoms and history before making any treatment decisions.

What Is The Latest Treatment For Atrial Fibrillation?

There are many types of treatment for AFib. Ablations are a procedure done inside the heart to treat atrial fibrillation that helps break up the electrical signals that cause the arrhythmia by using small burns or freezes. There are also several tests that can be performed like blood tests, EKG, Holter monitor, echocardiogram, and others. Your doctor will help you decide the best testing and treatment for your individual case.
